Do nada (de repente)

A expressão do nada em português remete a algo que aconteceu repentinamente, inesperadamente. Da mesma forma, em inglês usa-se o termo out of the blue. In other words, something that happens out of the blue is sudden and unexpected.

a) Emily seemed happy at the party when out of the blue she went to the bathroom and started to cry.
Emily (ou Emília) parecia feliz na festa quando do nada foi ao banheiro e começou a chorar.

Componentes de um carro

A friend of yours went to a 2nd-hand dealer's and tested a car. However, he was not satisfied. So, he decided to write a letter of complaint. Pay attention to the words in bold.

Um amigo seu foi a uma concessionária de segunda mão e testou um carro. No entanto, ele não ficou satisfeito. Então ele resolveu escrever uma carta de reclamação. Preste atenção nas palavras em negrito.

''To my surprise, your ''immaculate'' car presented some serious problems. The windshield (1) was cracked, the indicator (2) was broken, the right door (3) was dented and the right handle (4) was loose. When I started the car, I noticed the engine was not tuned. Besides, the car didn't respond to the steering wheel (5) when I tried to turn left. To make matters worse, it started raining and the windshield wipers (6) would not work! When I tried to stop, believe it or not, the brakes (7) didn't work! Finally, I managed to stop the car. After all these problems - I confess I was sort of shocked - your salesperson was even numbering the advantages of your ''fantastic'' cars by opening the hood (8) to try to show me that the engine was OK. After that, I noticed that the place for the spare tire (9) in the trunk (10) was empty!! It's unbelievable!!''
